The morning press - digital signage news for January 9

Let's see, what'd I miss this week?  A couple of the more interesting industry new items from the past few days:

  • OAAA Report 2008 OOH Revenue Flat - While researchers seem to think that digital out-of-home will see growth in 2009, the OAAA says that 2008 wasn't great: "Out of home advertising industry revenue in the USA was flat during the first nine months of 2008, accounting for $5.45 billion in advertising revenue and performing better than many other media segments. In the third quarter of the year, out of home fell six percent, accounting for $1.62 billion in total advertising expenditures."
  • Advertisers, Marketers Brace For Obama's Regulatory Impact - We haven't really had to deal much with government regulation in the digital signage sector (though our comrades in the digital billboard space surely wish they could say the same). However, there's a very real possibility that consumer advocates will make significant progress in getting more anti-marketing legislation passed in the coming years: "With regulatory-minded lawmakers set to oversee commerce and communications, and the credit crisis compelling even Republicans to rethink laissez-faire, there will probably be more power to oversee marketing at the Federal Communications Commission and Federal Trade Commission, and more rules about everything from product placement to behavioral marketing."
  • Wireless Ronin Releases Automotive Digital Signage Whitepaper - I can't imagine that the automotive sector is the best place to be looking for business right now (and a note to any Congresspeople reading this: if you bail out Detroit and let them spend taxpayer money on digital signage, I'm emigrating to somewhere. Anywhere.), but Wireless Ronin seems to be plucking away at it anyway: "Included in the whitepaper is information on why the automotive industry is so interested in what digital signage has to offer, common myths on developing ROI for automotive digital signage, and the step-by-step process on developing a successful automotive digital signage ROI strategy."
  • Search Engine for Alternative Media - This is pretty slick. DoMedia put together a search engine for all kinds of OOH media, "from trash bins to kites to beach sand" (thanks AdLab).

  • Are you a cart puller? Relevation Research notes that since 74% of shoppers pull their shopping carts behind them while going down the checkout aisle, they may not be exposed to the majority of checkout-oriented marketing messages.

The morning press - digital signage news for January 5

Here are some of the more interesting industry new items from the past few days:

Focus Media loses Sports Media unit to competitor - Bejing-based flat-screen advertiser Good Media took over its fitness-center advertising competitor Sports Media, formerly owned by Focus Media. Ding Bingwen, former Sports Media president and new Good Media chief operating officer and board member, said Focus and Sports Media split over lack of profit guarantees. Considering that the digital signage units in Focus's portfolio are the more sound (and profitable) of its operations, it's unusual to see the firm shedding them right now -- especially when there's a deal in the works between Focus and SinaVision to merge the two companies' digital out-of-home advertising units.

Staples to revamp in-store marketing - News America  Marketing, who are most commonly known for their line of shelf talker advertising products for supermarkets and drug stores will apparently be assisting office supplier Staples with some changes to their in-store advertising lineup this year.  Hey, the approach is effective and cheaper than TV advertising (though they've gotten plenty of mileage out of their "Easy Button" campaign), so why not?

The Economist's guide to ad sales in 2009 - Advertisers and marketers are in for some hard times to be sure, but The Economist has stepped in and put together a short presentation on precisely why it's a bad idea to automatically cut back on marketing when budgets get tightened. The one-line summary: brands drive sales, and marketing drives brands. It's 57 slides, but you can read it in 5 minutes. I highly suggest you do (here's the link for folks who don't see the embedded slideshow).

The morning press - digital signage news for November 6

Here are some of today's interesting clips from the web (and I've been away for a while, so I have a bunch of items that have been on my list for a while):

  • CBS Outernet Builds Out GameStop TV Network - Since inking a deal with GameStop in June, CBS Outernet has so far installed a new, high-definition, digital network with 40" LCD screens in 1,500 GameStop stores. Installation of the remaining 2,500 stores will be completed by June 2009.
  • Network Digital Signage Report: Examine the Infrastructure, Displays and Technology - MultiMedia Intelligence believes that digital signage networks have a permanent place in the communications landscape. The biggest immediate challenge to digital signage is the current global economy. But once that red-flag is lowered, it is likely that investment in digital signage solutions will be as great as it has ever been.
  • Costco Adds Custom Media to In-Store TV Mix - The retailer has worked with Thomson's Premier Retail Networks, Inc. on its in-store media network and content strategy since 2004. The new agreement extends this relationship into 2010.
  • Digital Out-of-Home Ad Spend Triples - The U.S. digital out-of-home (OOH) media industry - which includes video ad networks, digital billboards and ambient ad platforms - is on pace to grow 11.2%, to $2.43 billion in 2008 and now comprises 29.1% of overall out-of-home ad spending.
  • ABI: Digital Signage Market to Double in Five Years - The research firm said this growth will be driven by retailers and advertisers desire to better target consumers in the out-of-home media market. The report predicts that in the United States, the overall market for digital signage software, hardware, installation and management services will reach around $1.4 billion by 2013, up from the $641 million market in 2008.

Hotels implementing Flyte Systems airline information on the DisplayIQ interactive digital signage platform are the Fairmont Chicago and the Hyatt Regency Phoenix. A third installation is anticipated at a Ritz Carlton property by year end.
  • Channel M Rolls Out Its First Bilingual In-Store TV Network - Channel M is rolling out a new in-store network for PLS Check Cashers, one of the nation’s oldest and largest check cashing establishments. Walmart to roll out 2nd generation digital signage network with PRN and others

There has been much speculation about what (if anything) Walmart was planning to do with their in-store TV network, which has been more or less the same for quite a few years now. Some suspected they would in-house network and media operations. Others thought they would continue to let PRN operate it, much as they had before. Today it looks like the cat's out of the bag:
Custom programming on the new network will be provided by Studio2, a newly formed company led by key advertising executives who are experts in in-store communications and were involved in the development and testing of the new network.

Network operations, implementation, advertising sales and HDTV wall programming will be provided by Thomson's Premier Retail Networks (PRN), Walmart's current partner for these services.

Response measurement, learning, and message optimization technologies will be provided by DS-IQ, which supplied analytical insights for the network pilot last year.
PRN's involvement on the network end isn't surprising, since they have a rather low-cost means of getting content to lots of screens, and all of the usual best-of-breed content delivery features. However, Walmart decided to split the content part out into an entirely new company, which I think is pretty remarkable. While we've long felt that there are very few -- if, in fact any -- digital out of home agencies out there right now, it would seem that Walmart has not only agreed, but decided to take matters into their own hands (in a way that really only they can). I would more than expect that they'll take on other clients besides Walmart, which will probably result in a bunch of new best practices for digital signage content floating out there. Here's hoping that we see some additional validation of our own findings :)

Also noteworthy is DS-IQ's involvement. Needless to say, this is a HUGE deal for the company and their technology.

What I'm still waiting to hear is what, if any, role Saatchi X -- another entity essentially formed at Walmart's demand -- will play. After all, they're supposedly THE expert group when it comes to marketing at-retail, and we know they already spend a good deal of time poking around in Walmart stores on behalf of their biggest client.

I'm sure we'll be hearing more about this network in the news, and of course lots of people will be out there watching the roll out as it starts up in September.

Today the company announced its agreement with Valley Ear, Nose & Throat to install Mediplay’s digital signage system in 14 Valley ENT locations across Arizona.
  • Fred Meyer Goes Hi-Def - Fred Meyer has outfitted its electronics departments with a new high-definition digital signage network. Custom content is being developed to play on LCD and plasma TV screens positioned along the West Coast supercenter's media wall. There are an estimated 35 to 40 screens on the floor at any given time, which translates to about 5,000 in the network.
  • SeeSaw Adds Inventory From Sports Networks - Inventory from DirecTV's Atherton Communications, ONTrack, OnSite Network and The Bar Network increase SeeSaw's sports enthusiast network by about 3 million weekly impressions for a total of about 12 million.

  • The Golf Network Prepares Major Roll out with Series A Funding in Place - After three years of extensive planning, testing, and building industry relationships, The Sports Retail Networks announced the closing of its Series A funding. The morning press - digital signage news for August 11

Here are some of today's interesting clips from the web:

Dave Haynes scooped me on the first two -- that guy clearly has too much free time. But if you have absolutely nothing better to do, you might want to check out his new web site. Anyway...
  • Big 3 TV Networks Follow Consumers Out of the Living Room - In recent months, the three oldest -- Walt Disney's ABC, General Electric's NBC Universal and CBS Corp.'s flagship operation -- have set up ventures to place ads on screens that consumers might watch as they fill up at the gas station, hunt for produce in the supermarket or shop at the mall.
  • National CineMedia 2Q Ads Drop - NCM said total revenues grew 3.6% to $86.7 million in the second quarter, compared to the same period last year. This growth rate is sharply down from 46.6% growth between the second quarters of 2006 and 2007. Advertising revenue was down 2.5% in the second quarter of 2008 to $74.8 million, also sharply down from the company's 52.8% ad revenue growth last year.
  • Out-Of-Home Not Running Out-Of-Gas, Report Finds - Out-of-home's reach and frequency have remained "virtually unchanged"--even as consumers react to high fuel prices by driving and flying less, the OAAA asserted. Regardless of gas prices, most Americans still have to go to work, prompting many to turn to public transportation, which offers equivalent exposure to out-of-home media via buses, subways and commuter rail.
  • VisionChina launches $162 million follow-on - VisionChina was one of the most successful IPOs by a Chinese company last year, pricing its initial offering at $8 a share in December. The company’s share price closed at $20.34 on Friday, bucking the markets' downward trend.

The morning press - digital signage news for August 4

Here are some of today's interesting clips from the web:

  • Infosys to help retailers watch in-store activity - The company has launched a new technology platform called 'ShoppingTrip360', incorporating a number of auto-ID technologies to help retailers and consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies gain better visibility into in-store shopper and inventory activity.
  • P&G, Unilever Slash Ad Spending - Procter & Gamble Co. slashed media spending last quarter at a steep double-digit pace that accelerated as the quarter progressed -- a move that bodes ill for media players who had been counting on the relative stability of the world's biggest advertiser.
  • Coke to sell ads on its vending machines - Coke is going to start advertising other brands on its vending machines, beginning with a pilot programme in California. AVT has negotiated a cooperative agreement with Coca Cola to distribute vending machines with three to six month campaigns.
  • Channel M Creates Online Content for WaMu - The company is creating original content for a new live entertainment-themed portal operated by Washington Mutual, called Washington Mutual Live. The deal follows the announcement by Captivate, another major place-based video, that it will also be launching online content in the near future.
  • PSI Corp. Announces Successful Launch of E-Banking Kiosk - PSI is having customers using the various services such as ATM, bill pay, check cashing, purchase of phone cards and gift cards among the kiosk's many services. (these guys have a seemingly-unrelated digital signage network in NY area hospitals)
  • Provision teams With LocalVision Digital Advertising to Increase Advertising Revenues - The partnership will bring LocalVision's advertising to Provision's 84 screens, including Fred Meyer Stores, in the greater-Portland area, adding more than 5 million new impressions per month to Provision's screens. LocalVision's top-tier brand advertisers will now be able to feature their messaging on Provision's fast-growing network of 3DEO Media Centers located in retail locations.

The morning press - digital signage news for July 9

Here are some of today's interesting clips from the web:
  • OAAA and AAAA announce Digital Out-of-Home Media Proof of Performance Reports - The Committee and OAAA agreed upon new guidelines for the reports for digital units. These reports provide a spot or "play" list similar to what is common in radio and television reporting. They are generated by the out-of-home vendor's computers that operate the digital networks and provide exact campaign details. (Dave Haynes picked this up first here).
  • Ecast Network to present 'VH1 Rock Honors: The Who' - After finding success with two previous promotions, VH1 has again partnered with the Ecast media network to promote the "VH1 Rock Honors: The Who" in 10,000 bars and nightclubs across the country. The show premieres on VH1 on Thursday, July 17 at 9:00 p.m.
  • Avocent Restructures, Plans Business Unit Sale - Among the changes, Avocent intends to sell the portion of its entrepreneurial Connectivity and Controls business unit dedicated to its pro AV and Equinox products. (that likely includes the line of video range extenders that were used in a number of digital signage networks).
  • Attention, Shoppers: Soon Nielsen May Be Rating You - TV ratings giant Nielsen is branching out beyond television and into grocery and retail stores, installing high-tech cameras and sensors in hundreds of U.S. stores to see (anonymously) if all those fancy product displays actually persuade people to buy differently. (not news to lots of us, but the mainstream press is starting to pay a lot more attention!)
  • Charter Digital Media Expands Relationship With RMS Networks - Charter Digital Media (CDM) the national sales management, marketing and consulting firm to digital media and out-of-home networks, has expanded its relationship with RMS Networks, Inc. by selecting rVue, RMS’ ad and content serving technology for its out-of-home networks.

Here are some of today's interesting clips from the web:

  • UzoneMedia and ComfortDelGro to Launch iCabTV - UzoneMedia's iCabTV will be installed in ComfortDelGro taxis in stages over the next few months. With at least 1,000 ComfortDelGro taxis expected to carry the system by fourth quarter of 2008, iCabTV will reach more than 30,000 affluent consumers, business professionals, and tourists across Singapore on a daily basis.
  • Ads Give Moviegoers Chance to Interact - A deal struck earlier this month between Verizon Wireless and cinema-advertising network Screenvision combines mobile and social-networking applications to test an interactive polling program in American movie theaters.
  • CBS Outdoor unveils digital screens in major Tube stations - CBS Outdoor has signed up NestlĂ©, BSkyB, Magners, Paramount, InBev and Dewynters as its launch partners on its digital Cross-track Projection (XTP) screens. The high definition out-of-home offering launches today on the London Underground.

The morning press - digital signage news for June 20

Here are some of today's interesting clips from the web:

  • POPAI Research -- Digital Signage: The Global Study Two Senses and Unlimited Possibilities - POPAI Germany and GIM teamed up to develop a globally relevant and sound analysis of the digital signage market, of the existing concepts and projects as well as the market participants and their forecasts for the coming years. The result -- the first worldwide study on digital signage -- will provide operators, prospective operators, observers and decision makers, with a comprehensive guidebook for all parts of the market, can serve as a reference with a place on the desk of all who are close to the market the world over.
  • NBC Adds Fuel To Fuelcast - NBC Everywhere, the out-of-home video network operated by NBC Universal, is expanding its partnership with the Fuelcast Network, which operates a network of video displays in pumps at gas stations. In addition to bringing NBCU content to another 100 stations around the U.S., the deal makes NBCU the exclusive content provider and ad sales partner for Fuelcast; its official name is now the "Fuelcast Network powered by NBC."
  • Destination Media, LG Electronics announce partnership - For advertisers, the collaboration will leverage LG's screen technology and Destination Media's proven non-traditional marketing strategies. Offering media networks one of the industry's most comprehensive selections of flat- panel displays and related distribution technology, LG Electronics will be the exclusive screen provider for a number of Destination Media's extensive out- of-home marketing networks. LG also plans to advertise on various Destination Media digital out-of-home TV Networks.
  • GameStop selects The Marketing Arm as AOR - Video game retailer GameStop Corp. has named The Marketing Arm as its promotions agency of record. It will also be responsible for direct marketing. The agency will work to develop fully integrated promotional events for GameStop, including in-store experiences and merchandising.
  • Matrox Veos Extends Digital Signage - Veos enables a single computer to output up to three channels of content along a single metal-based cable. All Veos components provide over 330 feet of extension with the ability to daisy-chain as many as required, allowing for a virtually unlimited number of displays-with zero loss to image quality.
  • Nielsen Out-of-Home Data Released this Summer - Nielsen says that about 8 percent of television viewing takes place out-of-home, and networks have long argued that they don’t receive credit from advertisers for such viewing. If the networks are able to combine out-of-home data with typical television ratings, they could potentially persuade advertisers to pay for the ratings lift. MediaPost points out that the scenario would likely be very beneficial to sports programming, as consumption in bars is high.

The morning press - digital signage news for June 3

Starting to get caught up now... Here are some recent interesting clips from the web:

  • Shoppers to be tracked with infrared beams - Nielsen's PRISM study crosses the pond. Wal-Mart and Procter & Gamble hope to introduce the system internationally within a couple of years and believe it will have a profound impact on the industry's ability to predict the behaviour of shoppers.
  • Why Your Car May Soon Be Driving Digital Advertising - With send/receive capabilities and overall bandwidth improving, local contextual advertising, perhaps rich-media-based, is just around the corner. Google already allows users in Europe to send directions from the web to maps on connected dashboards. Microsoft is working in a system through its Sync technology to provide ad-supported, location-based information for which users would normally pay.
  • ABC New Media Sales Uses In-Store Video to Reinforce Brand Campaigns - The feedback ABC has reviewed on many different levels has been overwhelmingly positive, and momentum continues to build as in-store viewing becomes more an established part of the shopping experience at Meijer stores. Television has been most people’s primary source of news and entertainment for decades. So it’s only reasonable to expect that TVs located in other venues would attract considerable attention and interest.

The morning press - digital signage news for May 14

Seems like it's been a slow news week! Here are some recent interesting clips from the web:

  • Vast arrays of TVs for patrons help eateries channel profits - "What seems to resonate with customers is the ability to feel a little bit like you're in your own living room - only on steroids - where you've got news, sports, cartoons, or whatever it is you like, and you can select what you want to view when you're there," [McDonald's franchisee Mark Watson] said.
  • NTN Buzztime, Inc. Announces First Quarter 2008 Results - Revenue from continuing operations decreased by $0.5 million or 7% to $7.2 million for the first quarter of 2008 compared to revenues of $7.7 million for the first quarter of 2007. Net loss from continuing operations for the first quarter of 2008 was $2.3 million compared to a net loss of $0.8 million for the first quarter of 2007. Although the customer site count declined by only approximately 4.5% comparing the 2008 first quarter with the equivalent period of 2007, revenue decreased by a higher percentage due to the longer-term effect on recurring revenues of a net decline in sites over recent quarters.
  • AirMedia Group Q1 profit surges; Guides Q2 Revenue - The Beijing, China-based company’s net income for the first quarter surged to US$7.28 million from US$1.87 million in the previous year. Net income attributable to ordinary shareholders was US$7.28 million or US$0.05 per share, compared to US$1.52 million or US$0.02 per share in the year-ago period. Net income per ADS was US$0.10, up from US$0.03 in the prior year. Adjusted net income increased to US$8.46 million or US$0.06 per share from US$1.93 million or US$0.03 per share last year. Adjusted net income per ADS rose to US$0.12 from US$0.06 in the preceding year.
  • Adspace Mall Network Expands to Tennessee - The Rivergate Mall, CoolSprings Galleria, and the Hickory Hollow Mall in Nashville have joined the Adspace Mall Network, the largest in-mall digital advertising network in the country.

The morning press - digital signage news for April 23

Here are some of today's interesting clips from the web:

  • Industry Standard highlights Channel M, Ripple, Danoo and others - Retailers are starting to invest in interactive displays which can show dynamic ads inside stores to better target customers who are stuck waiting in store lines. From the gas station to the coffee store, these displays are popping up everywhere. Pretty soon, look for an ad display in your bathroom. (joke, for now). Actually, it's not... we had a customer that was installing screens above urinals and in toilet stalls back in 2005, believe it or not.
  • CBS Outernet and others join OVAB - New member companies include: Arena Media Networks (digital signage advertising in sports and entertainment venues), CBS Outernet (in-store digital video networks in grocery stores, pharmacies, and other retail locations), and Zoom Media (an indoor network provider to over 5,000 venues, including fitness centers, indoor soccer facilities, bowling centers, family entertainment centers, restaurants and nightclubs).
  • Minicom looks at the cost ramifications of player placement in digital signage networks - While both media "player in back room" and "player at screen" technology are popular choices for the "last mile" of digital signage networks there are significant differences between the two which have major repercussions on TCO. The new white paper shows that extension technology in a ten screen Digital Signage network over a three year period can save over $10,000 dollars in service costs. Not surprisingly, the best TCO comes from using equipment that Minicom sells! I actually like their stuff and have used it in numerous deployments, but take the "research" findings with a grain of salt :)
  • Future Media picks up 3 more Indian retail chains - Future Media, the media company of Future Group, in an aggressive sweep has picked up media rights of three players in the retail space – My Dollarstore, R-Mall in Mulund and Oberoi Mall in Kandivali. Future Media is in the business of creating media opportunities in spaces of consumption, within and outside the Future Group.

The morning press - digital signage news for April 22

Here are some of today's interesting clips from the web:

  • 3 Minute Ad Age covers Reuters' Times Square sign change, Captivate's elevator signage business model - In Times Square, the now-merged Thomson and Reuters publishing operations took over all the jumbo screens to beam their new orange logo graphics to the world. In other news in this 3 Minute Ad Age report, some Ad-Tech attendees were nearly gleeful about the prospects of an economic downturn. And, Captivate Networks explains the latest audience data for elevator media. (link goes to iTunes, which appears to be the only way to get the video clip)
  • Channel M Receives Investment from Intel Capital - The company has completed Series C financing from Intel Capital. • MS Surface goes live in AT&T Wireless Stores - MTi's Jason Goldberg took at a look at this up-and-coming gimmick technology, concluding that "the customers in the store getting demos seemed generally wowed by the MS Surface. I didn’t observe any shoppers go from the Surface directly to the cash register, but today was a lot more about introducing a new gadget than it was about signing up new AT&T customers." (Not sure how long Jason has had a blog, but it's worth a look in its own right)

Posterscope study "substantiates the power of out-of-home"

As MediaWeek reports, out-of-home specialist Posterscope USA released a new study aimed towards making the out-of-home media buying process easier in light of the bevy of new types of ad formats released in the past decade or so. "The company polled 5,000 Adults 15-64 about their receptivity across all media, including mobile, out-of-home newspapers, magazines, cinema, radio, TV and the Internet. In addition to media habits, [the study, called OCS] delved into several lifestyle and demographic factors such as life stages, activities, hobbies and interests, values and attitudes, technology usage, and more standard demographic variable including age, income, education and occupation." The findings were pretty interesting (and these are more or less plagiarized directly from the MediaWeek article):
  • Young adults are very receptive to out-of-home advertising, spending more time with out-of-home than the average adult: 84% of young adults notice advertising in movie theaters, 12% more likely than the average adult.
  • Airport advertising is a strong vehicle for reaching affluent adults, with more than half (57%) noticing advertising in airports
  • 47% credit airport advertising with helping them to pass the time.
  • Affluent adults are 56% more likely to visit gyms, 49% more likely to visit spas and 30% more likely to visit casual dining restaurants than the general population 18 and older.
Granted there's nothing earth-shattering about the above statistics, but they do point to the fact that while OOH advertising currently captures about 2% of the total ad spend here in the US, its influence is growing, particularly in the key demographic that most marketers will do (practically) anything to reach.
